In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.
— George Orwell

Adapted for the stage by Michael Gene Sullivan, Scott will be directing this modern production of this prophetic work, which in his view has never been more relevant.

Based on the iconic novel by George Orwell, "1984" brings us the story of Winston Smith, a cog in the giant machine of the State. Physically and mentally under the omnipresent eye of Big Brother, Winston uncovers indisputable proof that the Leader is lying. Desiring to escape, he commits another crime by falling in love with Julia, which brings a deeper blur between propaganda and reality. With the brutal “help” of four Party Members, Winston is forced to confess his “Thought-Crimes” before an unseen inquisitor, and the audience — which acts as a silent witness. This is a ferocious and provocative adaptation of one of the most prescient works of literature of the last century.

This production is being produced by Manawatu Theatre Inc. and will be on stage from 16 June to 1 July 2017 at Globe 1 in Palmerston North.
